Wargroove Review

Being someone who never had a chance to play Advance Wars or Fire Emblem and never expressed much interest in that genre anyway, this game was quite interesting to experience for me, since I don't know anything about those games I won’t be comparing this game to them and will just try to explain it how it is.

The Game

I loved how it started, very straight forward.

The campaign throws you in the shoes of the villain with a quest to start, mechanics are really simple to understand, this might seem like a tedious and repeated line but hold down the pitchforks ... it’s an "easy to learn hard to master" scenario here, don't hunt me down heh.

After finishing the prologue mission the game starts and your adviser provides the tutorial, there isn't much to it all you gotta do is point on a unit and order it somewhere then attack.

You take turns, each turn you can command every unit to an action, after all is done then it’s your opponent's turn to play, you can use units to move between different terrain, use offensive or defensive abilities, or capture strongholds which provides income every turn.

The game has a lot of different units, swordsmen, pikemen, archers, actual pups that are a band of adorable looking dogs who are good for scouts, flying units, wagons to move you faster and much more, there are different synergies and strength and weaknesses to each unit, by understanding that you become better at this game when it comes to higher difficulty levels in the game.

Terrains effect your units, standing in the forest grants higher defense to your troops but lower vision and movement, same for mountains, while standing on a river lowers the defense and there are other terrain effects for you to discover.

You have a commander, which is the main character when they die you lose the mission, each commander has a special groove ability, that ranges from healing, summoning to a lunging attack, each commander is different.

You control a stronghold you are able to deploy a unit from it every turn, gold is granted based on the number of houses you have captured, they can also be used to reinforce close units using some of your gold.

When engaging the enemies you start the battle animation which looks good as you can see in the store page screenshots and/or videos but it gets really frustrating eventually! Luckily the game comes with ways to either speed it up a little or skip it all together, you can choose to disable it completely, or limit it to just your turn or only plays when commanders are attacking, thank you for including those as options...I would have really hated it if they weren't there.

Campaign has over 30+ missions from what I saw so far, alongside some side missions that are really fun to play (the dog one was just perfect) the story carries on between them, as you play on you unlock more modes and characters to choose from in arcade mode, the story is interesting but it’s nothing special or different from other games I played but I appreciate the comedy in it, it has voiced lines but not fully, just enough to pronounce the jest of each textbox above the characters or grunting or shouting which adds an extra flavor that I enjoyed.

Other modes in the game are arcade which you progress through different levels with their own dialogues and fun things.

Puzzle mode which requires you to win the current map in one single turn, it’s quite tricky this one actually! you'd think that’s easy but you need to plan it out carefully so prepare to lose a lot but it’s very quick and fun and it’s my favorite part about the game really.

Campaign/Map creator

Thank you for including this! people will surly enjoy making their own campaigns, and get this ...not only are you able to create the maps and levels in a campaign you can actually fully customize your own game.

I am not kidding, it’s outstanding, you can make cutscenes, add actors to say things, events, shake screen or text, you can choose where they come out from in the cutscene, what they say, where they head to, how many units are in the scene, what happens after, where the game starts, sounds to play. Okay so to explain it simpler if you ever heard of the software RPG maker, it’s similar to it, you can actually make a really beautiful campaign with this, outstanding simply, just outstanding the possibilities this holds.

Asynchronous online multiplayer, I am not a huge fan of this but having it as an option certainly doesn’t hurt.

Now let me talk about the visuals ...its stunning, you can clearly see the effort put into it, fantastically animated beautiful pixels that makes my eyes dance in joy, magnificent ...seriously.

The music also goes perfectly, actually fully into this.

In an attempt to sum this up let me put it like the following.

I want to say this again because I cannot stress how extremely powerful this game's campaign editing tool is, you can make your own story! This is just brilliant, I wore a hat just so I can tip it off to the developer in respect, this game is really great if you think you'd like this type of combat system? you won’t go wrong here, the sheer amount of content in this should suffice, absolute gem.

I cannot stress how extremely powerful campaign editing tool is in this game, you can make your own story! This is just brilliant, I wore a hat just so I can tip it off to the developer in respect, this game is really great if you think you would like this type of combat system? you will not go wrong here, the sheer amount of content in this should suffice, absolute gem

  • Fully established campaign creator that made my jaw drop
  • Simple gameplay tactics built up slowly to master it
  • When the dog units in the game falls in combat, they run away and not die like all other units in the game ...excellent
نقاط ضعف
  • The game works as in when you hit a unit they hit back, so this creates an issue with online multiplayer if both players are fully aware of this, they will try their best to distant each other from themselves and wait for someone to get close enough for y
  • There are some missions where you are supposed to make your way through a bunch of enemies and the road was made too long and the mission took so much of my time that i had to reduce difficulty to easiest and replay it so I just rush through them
